Getting a whole team together for the Christmas do is hard enough without asking everyone to find their way somewhere awkward. Flight Club at Station Hill in Reading is around two minutes’ walk from the station, which makes it one of the easier places in Berkshire to get a group to.
From 16 November the venue is decked out for Christmas, with trees and wreath-wrapped oches, and its festive packages run until New Year’s Eve.
Social Darts, explained
Flight Club calls its version of the pub game Social Darts. Cameras above each board track where every dart lands, the screens work out the scores, and you don’t need any skill to enjoy it. There are seven games. In Killer you hit your own number three times before going after everyone else, and in Limbo, the newest, each player has to score lower than the one before.
The Reading venue has ten semi-private oches (oche is darts’ name for the line you throw from), with food and drink brought to you, so nobody has to keep wandering off to the bar mid-game. The cameras film the night too, and the videos and group photos are emailed the next day.
Why it works for the office party
A darts game breaks the ice faster than a round of awkward small talk, which helps when the party mixes colleagues from different teams. And because the evening isn’t built around drinking, it works just as well for anyone who’s driving or simply not drinking.
Christmas food, drink and packages
Packages are for groups of ten or more, from £50 a head, with canapés, pizza, mini desserts and drinks included. On the festive list are the Sleigh My Margarita, flavoured with cranberry and cinnamon, plus pigs in blankets and pulled turkey sliders. Flight Club says menus can vary from venue to venue, so check what Reading is serving when you book.
If an afternoon suits your crowd better, the Festive Brunch runs every Saturday and Sunday in December. Groups of 37 or more book through the events team.
